Mobile Field Use: The Phone Viewer
How to use the FieldMarkup phone viewer to update device status, take photos, and manage installs from the field.
What the phone viewer is
The phone viewer is a separate, mobile-optimized view of your markup. It lives at a different URL from the desktop editor and is designed for field techs who need to:
- See where each device goes on the plan
- Update device status as they work (Wired, Installed, Tested...)
- Take photos and pin them to specific devices
- Browse device details and photos
There are no drawing tools on the phone viewer. It's display + status updates only. The floor plan is read-only. You can pan and zoom but not place or move devices. For design work, use the full editor on a tablet or desktop.
How to open it
From the project page on your phone, tap a floor plan. On a small screen you land in the mobile viewer automatically. You can also send the direct link to a team member; they'll be prompted to sign in if they aren't already.
The URL looks like /m/[markupId].
The Devices tab
The Devices tab lists every device on the current floor plan. Each device shows:
- Its label (C1, CR2, SD3)
- Device type (Dome camera, Card reader, etc.)
- Current status with color indicator
- Location and notes (if filled in)
Tap a device to open its detail view, where you can update the status, edit notes, and view or take photos.
Updating status from the field
This is the core field workflow:
- Open the markup on your phone.
- Find the device you just finished (either by tapping it on the plan or scrolling the Devices list).
- Tap the current status to cycle to the next one (e.g. "Wired" → "Installed").
- The change saves immediately. The status ring on the plan updates in real time.
If your project uses the New install workflow mode, statuses advance in order: Planned → Wired → Installed → Tested → Approved. You can tap to advance or pick any status directly.
Taking photos
Photos pinned to devices are one of the most useful features for closeout documentation. In the mobile viewer:
- Tap a device to open its detail view.
- Tap the camera button to take a photo (or pick one from your gallery).
- The photo is uploaded and pinned to that specific device.
Photos are stored per-device, so when you open the device later (in the editor or the device matrix), you see every photo taken at that location. This replaces the old workflow of dumping 200 photos into a folder and trying to figure out which camera each one belongs to.
The Photos tab
The Photos tab in the mobile viewer shows every photo taken across all devices on this floor plan. It's a gallery view. Tap any photo to see it full-screen with its device label and location info. Useful for reviewing what's been documented so far.
The floorplan view
The floorplan itself is visible in the mobile viewer with all devices, FOV cones, and status rings rendered. You can pinch to zoom and drag to pan. Tapping a device on the plan opens its detail view (same as tapping it in the Devices list).
Permissions on mobile
Anyone invited to the project (Owner or Editor) has full access in the mobile viewer: update status, edit notes, take photos.
Demo projects (the seeded sample project) are always read-only regardless of role. To give a customer or outside party a look without an account, send them a read-only share link instead of an invite.
Design work happens on a tablet or desktop
The phone viewer is intentionally field-only: display, status, and photos, with no drawing tools. To place new devices, adjust FOV cones, or draw annotations, open the same project on a tablet or desktop, where you get the full editor.
