You can also create custom hardware devices with your own label code, category, color, and shape (circle, square, diamond, triangle, hexagon, star, half-circle, or oval).

How to place a device

  1. Click the Icon button in the toolbar (or its dropdown arrow to browse categories).
  2. The icon picker panel opens on the right. Click the device you want to place.
  3. Click anywhere on the floor plan to drop it.
  4. The device appears with an auto-numbered label (e.g. C1 for the first camera, CR1 for the first card reader).

After placing, the tool switches back to Select so you can reposition or edit the device. To place several devices of the same type in a row, turn on Rapid place in the toolbar or hold the Z key. The tool stays active until you let go or switch tools.

Auto-numbered labels

Every device gets an automatic label based on its type:

  • All cameras share a single counter: C1, C2, C3...
  • Card readers: CR1, CR2...
  • Smoke detectors: SD1, SD2...
  • Custom hardware uses whatever label prefix you defined.

Labels auto-increment per markup. The label appears as a small colored badge below the device icon on the floor plan and carries through to the exported PDF and device schedule.

Moving, resizing, and deleting

Switch to the Select tool (V key), then:

  • Move: Click and drag a device to reposition it.
  • Resize: Drag the corner handles to make the icon larger or smaller.
  • Rotate: Use the rotation slider in the properties panel (appears when a device is selected). For cameras, rotating also rotates the FOV cone.
  • Delete: Select the device and press Delete or Backspace.

You can also select multiple items at once by dragging a selection rectangle (marquee) around them, then move or delete the whole group.

The device drawer

When you select a device, a details panel opens where you can edit:

  • Name / notes: free text for model numbers, mounting notes, cable run info.
  • Location: where on the building this device sits (e.g. "Main lobby, above east entrance").
  • Status: the install progress (changes depending on your project's workflow mode).
  • Photos: tap to attach photos from the field, pinned to this specific device.

Everything you enter here flows through to the device schedule, the BOM, and the device matrix.

Door groups

For access-controlled doors, you typically place multiple devices at the same door (card reader, electric strike, door contact, REX). FieldMarkup lets you group them as a door group (D1, D2, D3...).

Grouped devices are connected by tether lines to a central pin (D1, D2) on the plan. In the device schedule, they sort together under their door name so the install crew can see exactly what goes on each door.

Icon styles

FieldMarkup offers three icon styles you can switch between in the editor:

  • Default: filled silhouettes that look like the actual device (dome shape, bullet body, PTZ sphere).
  • CAD: outline-only versions of the same icons, cleaner for printed plans.
  • CAD + Letter: outline shapes with an industry-standard letter code centered inside (D for dome, B for bullet, CR for card reader). This matches the BICSI/TIA plan-symbol convention.

For cameras, both "detailed" (form-factor silhouette) and "clean" (circle with letter) variants exist in the picker. Choose whichever reads best on your plan.
